RPT machines

The RPT machines are Roeders’ latest develo­pment. Thanks to numerous design impro­ve­ments and the refinement of the PRECITEMP® technology, the tolerances and surface roughness reliably machinable in many appli­ca­tions have been reduced by at least half compared to the proven RXP machines. In some cases, sub-micro­metre levels are achieved.

With its RXP machines, Roeders achieved a breakth­rough in the linear motor technology in year 2004. Well over 1,000 machines of the RXP500 alone were manufac­tured. Over the years, the machines have undergone conti­nuous techno­lo­gical develo­pment, enabling them to achieve unrivalled precision in many applications.

The larger the machine’s machining area, the larger are the tools required for the appli­cation. Roeders has taken this into account and developed a parti­cu­larly rigid machine design based on the QUADROGUIDE concept, which also allows the use of high-torque spindles. However, high-torque spindles are limited in terms of maximum rpm. For this reason, RXU machines often are built as “Z2” twin-spindle machines with two main spindles.

Due to the high precision of the RPT machines, with their extremely precise guideways provided by the NANOTOL® technology, the use of machines with hydro­static guideways such as the RHP machines is now only justified in few specia­lised appli­ca­tions. In these cases, they can achieve for example a sub-micro­metre roundness in small bores by grinding.

Frequently asked questions about precision down to the submicron range

Submicron precision — accuracies below one micro­meter — depends on the machine, its control and the machining process working together. The answers below explain why Roeders achieves the highest precision in milling and grinding, down to the submicron range.

What does submicron precision in machining mean?

Accuracies below one micro­meter (0.001 mm) on the finished part — in geometry and surface finish. Achieving it reliably requires the machine, control and process working together, not just one precise component.

Which machine factors are decisive for submicron precision?

Thermal stability, high struc­tural stiffness with low-friction guideways, high-resolution measuring systems, and a control/drive system fast and precisely enough regulated to follow the tool path without deviation. Roeders develops the control, drives and mechanics in-house, so these elements are perfectly tuned to one another.

How does the control system influence achie­vable precision?

The control inter­po­lates the programmed tool path and deter­mines the feed rate. This decides how accurately the machine follows the programmed tool path. The Roeders RMS6 control and drives process NC blocks in less than 0.1 ms with a look-ahead of more than 10,000 blocks and 32 kHz clock frequency in the drive modules, so contours are machined precisely even at high feed rates.

What role does tempe­rature play, and how is it handled?

Thermal drift is one of the biggest enemies of submicron accuracy. Roeders overcomes it with the long-time developed PRECITEMP® technology and thermally stable machine design, achieving high accuracies even when the ambient tempe­rature at the instal­lation site is not constant.

How do guideways and measuring systems contribute?

Low-friction, highly precise guideways with NANOTOL® concept avoid the micro-movements typical for roller guideways, while high-resolution optical scales resolve the axis positions within nanometer range — the basis for repeatable submicron results.

Is a precise machine enough, or does the process matter too?

The process matters as much as the machine — cutting strategy, tooling and CAM programming are decisive. Roeders supports this through its technology center and CAM support, and a test cut on a sample workpiece lets the achie­vable accuracy be demons­trated on the customer’s own part before purchase.

and therefore achieve the highest levels of accuracy even when the ambient tempe­ra­tures at the instal­lation site are not constant. In addition, the new NANOTOL® guideway concept signi­fi­cantly improves the running behaviour of the linear guideways.

The reliable geometric stability of Roeders machines enables quality control of machined workpieces to be carried out directly in the machine for many appli­ca­tions. To ensure the measu­rement accuracy, Roeders offers methods for self-monitoring the machines, which the user can utilize at any time. In colla­bo­ration with the Leibniz University Hannover, the measu­rement accuracy achie­vable in the machine was inves­ti­gated and lead to astonishing results. For many appli­ca­tions, the need of a separate measuring room can be elimi­nated. The measu­rement protocols and strategies were developed in colla­bo­ration with leading suppliers in the industry.

Produc­tivity+™ from Renishaw is a solution for carrying out quality control within the Roeders machine, for example by measuring standard geome­tries such as roundness, flatness, distances, etc. Alter­na­tively, HEXAGONs INSPECT software can be used. Both systems allow for a compa­rison between target measures and achieved measures with the display of devia­tions. Of course, free-form surfaces can also be compared point by point.

PRECITEMP® — High precision also in case of temperature fluctuations in the workshop

In most appli­ca­tions, tempe­rature fluctua­tions in the workshop are the main cause of inaccu­racies during machining. This also applies to air-condi­tioned workshops, where the tempe­rature often only fluctuates by a few degrees. This has therefore been a focus of develo­pment at Roeders in recent years. The result is the unique PRECITEMP® technology, which enables a tempe­rature-resistant optimization of the machine for maximum precision with a graduated concept depending on the requi­re­ments. The machine has been viewed holisti­cally and a compre­hensive solution for tempe­rature control of all machine components has been developed. Minimal residual errors are elimi­nated with software compensation.

Heat sources in the machine such as motors, main spindle, linear guideways (optional) and rotary axis bearings are also tempe­rature-controlled with high precision. As a result, the zero point of the machine is within +/- 1 µm, even with tempe­rature fluctua­tions in the workshop of up to +/- 3°C.

For the first time on the 5‑axis RPT Machines, the rotary axis bearings and machine table can also be tempe­rature-controlled. In addition, the torque motors in the rotary axes have Roeders’ own greatly improved tempe­rature control. This signi­fi­cantly reduces dimen­sional devia­tions at higher speeds or high torque loads on the rotary axes.

Zahlreiche Wasserkreisläufe

All heat sources within the machine are tempe­rature-controlled by numerous tempe­rature-control circuits. Where highest precision is required, the guideways can directly be temperature-controlled.


The hyste­resis of the cooling water used to regulate the machine’s tempe­rature is less than < +/- 0.1 Kelvin. In case of special requi­re­ments, this can be reduced to +/- 0.02 Kelvin.

For efficient parts production, workpieces without pallet can directly be exchanged for processing in the machine. The handling of workpieces with different sizes is realised by automa­ti­cally changing the gripper. Workpieces clamped on pallets can also be used in the same system. In this case the direct clamping system, which is mounted on a pallet, is removed from the machine by the automation.

Efficiency And Reliability

An ideal production environment is the condition
for highest possible quality.

Our entire assembly area is kept at a constant tempe­rature by the latest air-condi­tioning technology, with control of the floor tempe­rature and special hose venti­lation. The process heat generated by the machines under test is removed directly via a separate, central cooling circuit and is not allowed to dissipate in the hall itself. This reduces the energy consumption and is also ecolo­gi­cally sound.

The excep­tio­nally high level of in-house develo­pment for our machines with regard to the control technology, the drive technology, the construction and the appli­cation technology provides the sound basis for very efficient service. Several independent surveys by technical journals have repea­tedly confirmed that our service is industry-leading. Thanks to our detailed knowledge of all the main machine components, time-consuming queries at suppliers are avoided. Any problems or malfunc­tions which may arise are solved effici­ently and speedily by our own experts.
